SCDP Chair Jaime Harrison, “It’s Time to Drain the Swamp in Columbia”

Mar 28, 2016

Columbia, SC— SCDP Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement regarding today’s decision by the office of SC Attorney General Alan Wilson to remove the special prosecutor investigating corruption inside the state legislature.

“The sanctity of the Rule of Law is a fundamental component of American Democracy.  The people of South Carolina expect our laws and those who enforce the laws to be accountable, transparent, timely, and just.  We recently learned that Solicitor David Pascoe, the special prosecutor tasked with investigating legislative corruption was removed from the case.

“At this point, we are not aware of all of the details behind why the office of the South Carolina Attorney General has decided to remove the Solicitor, however with the rampant corruption here in South Carolina, this move does little to inspire confidence and faith into our political process.  The South Carolina Democratic Party asks that the SC Attorney General provide the people of South Carolina with an explanation for Solicitor Pascoe’s dismissal and more details regarding this issue.  In addition, in order avoid the appearance of bias; we believe that an independent special prosecutor selected by the US Justice Department should be appointed to continue looking into the allegations of public corruption.

“From political gerrymandering to public corruption, it is time to drain the swamp in Columbia and return to a government for the people and by the people.  We deserve better South Carolina!”
