Christale Spain

Christale Spain is the 1st Black Woman Elected to Chair the South Carolina Democratic Party

Christale Spain made history as the first Black woman to serve as Chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party. A proud South Carolina native, Christale’s journey into politics didn’t begin in Washington, but at the grassroots as a volunteer. She turned her lived experience into leadership. From the basketball court where she learned grit and teamwork, to single motherhood that grounded her priorities, to years of organizing across every corner of the state, she has always been driven by a belief that ordinary people deserve extraordinary representation.
From those early days, Christale’s leadership has been shaped by two forces: her deep love for her community and her role as the proud mother of her son, Zacchaeus “Zach” Spain, a recent graduate of Benedict College. Both motherhood and movement-building taught her resilience, grit, and the power of service.
Christale worked her way from volunteer to Executive Director of the State Party, serving under three chairs, and founding the South Carolina Democratic Black Women’s Caucus to ensure Black women’s voices were front and center in the Party. She has brought her organizing skills to the national stage as well, serving as Political Outreach Director for Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, State Director for Senator Cory Booker’s primary campaign, and as the lead for South Carolina’s 2020 Coordinated Campaign during Jaime Harrison’s historic U.S. Senate race.
Her career also includes work alongside Congressman James Clyburn in his legislative office, and serving at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as Senior Advisor for Black Engagement. There, she helped secure Democratic gains in the 2022 midterm elections.
Christale is a graduate of USC-Aiken and Columbia College and a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She carries her story as a mother, an organizer, and a barrier-breaker into every room she enters. For Christale, leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about building power, protecting democracy, and proving her favorite quote by Elaine Welteroth…that when you exist in spaces not built for you, just being you is a revolution.
