BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION TAKES ACTION TO CURB GUN VIOLENCE AS CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY MOVES THROUGH SC STATE HOUSE

Columbia, S.C. — The Biden-Harris Administration is taking deliberate action to reduce gun violence, enlisting the Department of Justice to help stop the proliferation of “ghost guns”and to create rules making it clear devices marketed as a stabilizing brace are subject to the National Firearms Act. They have additionally called on the DOJ to develop a model for “red flag” legislation states can enact at the local level.  President Biden has also named David Chipman, a gun owner, to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), a role that has been vacant since 2015.

The President has reiterated his calls for Congress to pass common sense legislation swiftly to reduce gun violence supported by an overwhelming majority of the American people. Most Americans agree that we need to take action to reduce gun violence, make our communities safer, and save lives. Meanwhile South Carolina Republicans have continued to proceed with House Bill 3096, a law known as Constitutional Carry, that if passed would allow anyone to carry a handgun, even without a permit.

“York County, South Carolina has now joined the list of grieving communities across the country who are reeling from gun violence.” said Trav Robertson, JR. SCDP Chair. “As a small state, we’ve now experienced three mass shootings, making it even more imperative that our elected officials pause to consider the ramifications of their actions.  Please take a moment to reflect on how to prevent this from happening again–to make sure that those suffering have access to mental health resources.
