As Ron DeSantis rolls out his veterans coalition in South Carolina, South Carolina Democratic Party spokesperson Alyssa Bradley released the following statement:
“Ron DeSantis is no friend to the thousands of service members and veterans who call the Palmetto State home. DeSantis has spent his political career opposing support for veterans — voting against federal funding for the VA, blocking affordable health care for Florida veterans, and putting MAGA culture wars above national security. South Carolina veterans see right through DeSantis for the failure he truly is.”
Here’s a look at DeSantis’ record of failing veterans:
- In Congress, DeSantis voted against increasing funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs — and providing military families and veterans with much-needed resources — three different times.
- DeSantis refuses to expand Medicaid, despite the important role Medicaid expansion plays in ensuring veterans who would otherwise be uninsured have access to the health care they need.
- He also wants to impose work requirements for those on Medicaid. This would harm veterans who are more likely to face barriers to stable employment because of disabilities, post-traumatic stress, and other chronic conditions.
- Just a few weeks ago, DeSantis advocated for a government shutdown that could have withheld pay for South Carolina’s 38,300 active duty service members.
