COLUMBIA— SCDP Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement regarding the announcement that the only hospital in Barnwell County will close for good on Thursday, January 21st as a result of Gov. Nikki Haley’s irresponsible leadership. Because Gov. Haley will not accept Medicaid dollars, the hospital no longer has the funds necessary to operate. A similar situation occurred in Bamberg County.
“It is becoming clearer every day that under Gov. Haley’s leadership, South Carolinians are increasingly unsafe,” SCDP Chair Jaime Harrison said. “We have dilapidated roads and bridges, insufficient resources to educate our children and, now, those living in rural areas of South Carolina are unable to access medical care. All because our Governor cares more about making a political statement than securing a better life for the citizens of her state.”
“While Gov. Haley sticks to her partisan loyalties, she is ignoring the real problems South Carolinians are facing. South Carolina Democrats are committed to improving the lives of our fellow citizens by expanding access to healthcare, repairing our aging and damaged infrastructure, and educating our future leaders.
“Most importantly, we are focused on finding common-sense solutions through compromise, rather than political posturing. We are hopeful that Gov. Haley and her fellow Republicans will join us in choosing people over politics.”
