“Today we reflect on the fifth anniversary of the Legislature’s decision to remove the Confederate Battle flag from the Statehouse grounds. A powerful example of what South Carolinians can achieve when we come together in service of a common goal.
As we look back to 2015, we laud the work of legislators, community leaders, and every day citizens, who through decades of action and sacrifice made this historic effort possible.
I remain hopeful about the future of South Carolina and her citizens. If we can take down a racist and divisive flag, we have the power to do anything. As we know there is more to do to bring true racial equity to every community in every county. For example, it is high time for the South Carolina Legislature to remove the statue of Pitchfork Ben Tillman.”
