COLUMBIA, SC — Due to decades of neglect and a lack of investment, South Carolina’s infrastructure is in disarray. Today Senator Tim Scott voted against even beginning debate on a bipartisan bill that will address South Carolina’s infrastructure needs and create a generation of good-paying union jobs.
Currently in South Carolina:
- 745 bridges and over 3,780 miles of highway across the state are in poor condition
- Since 2011, commute times have increased by 9.4%
- On average, each driver pays $564 per year in costs due to driving on roads in need of repair
- Over the next 20 years, South Carolina’s drinking water infrastructure will require $6.1 billion in additional funding
- More than 12% of South Carolinians live in areas where, by one definition, there is no broadband infrastructure that provides minimally acceptable speeds
“In November 2022 Tim Scott will have to explain to South Carolina voters why he was opposed to even beginning the debate about this critical investment in our state’s infrastructure,” said SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. “Our highways are a mess and it’s costing the people of our state thousands of dollars a year. Tim Scott complains that the taxpayer will feel the cost of these fixes, but the truth is that they are already feeling the cost of insufficient infrastructure to a much higher degree. South Carolina deserves better.”
