COLUMBIA, SC — While President Biden is marshaling U.S. allies in support of Ukraine’s heroic fight for its freedom, twice-impeached President Donald Trump is throwing a rally in Florence to attack his political enemies Tom Rice and Nancy Mace and distract from his recent comments boasting his close relationship with President Putin and applauding Putin’s invasion as “genius” and “smart”.
While Trump’s recent comments are damning, they are only the latest developments in Trump’s long history of siding with Putin over U.S. and Ukraine interests. Trump declared his trust in Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies, withheld military assistance from Ukraine to achieve his domestic political goals, reportedly planned to pull out of the NATO alliance, and his indicted political campaign advisors have demonstrated strong connections with the Russian government.
“Despite his long track record of siding with Putin over American interests, Republicans continue their unwavering loyalty to Trump,” said SCDP Chair Trav Robertson. “Every elected Republican leader in South Carolina must answer a simple question: Do you stand with Ukraine and our allies in the fight for democracy? Or do you stand with Trump and his vocal support for brutal Russian dictator Vladimir Putin?
“Republicans can’t criticize Putin for killing innocent Ukrainian civilians and attempting to topple a democracy while willfully ignoring Trump’s affection for Putin and his autocratic regime.”
