SC GOP BLOCKS FUNDS TO PAY BONUSES TO STATE EMPLOYEES
Republicans refuse to grant $1200.00 checks to civil servants
Columbia, S.C.— Yesterday, the South Carolina House voted down an amendment to the budget proposed by Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, providing a $1200 bonus to all State employees making less than $50,000 per year. Following the vote, Rep. Cobb-Hunter took to Twitter, calling out her GOP colleagues for their failure to support the working men and women of South Carolina, but to also implore fellow Democrats to pay attention to which legislators are voting for the economic well being and which ones are voting against it.
In response, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair, Trav Robertson Jr. released the following statement:
“Obstructionist members of the SC GOP have shown yet again their unwillingness to support any policy that will increase the quality of life for working class citizens, particularly our state employees. This is despicable and comes on the heels of Henry McMaster declaring a premature end to the pandemic when many South Carolina families are still struggling to recover physically and financially from COVID-19.
I stand with Rep. Cobb-Hunter and her call for all South Carolinians, not just Democrats, to pay close attention to the elected officials working to increase their quality of life and those who refuse. Democrats actually care about working people and today’s vote on amendment 16A is proof that Republicans at the State House could care less.”
