CHARLESTON—The South Carolina Congressional Republican delegation today voted against a long-term bipartisan transportation bill that would provide states with the funds necessary to complete and improve infrastructure projects. U.S. Representatives Joe Wilson, Jeff Duncan, Mick Mulvaney, Trey Gowdy, and Mark Sanford were among five of the 65 who voted against the measure to fix the nation’s dilapidated roads and bridges.
“The South Carolina Republican delegation should be ashamed of themselves for choosing politics over the safety of the citizens they represent,” Jason Perkey, Executive Director of the South Carolina Democratic Party said. “South Carolina has countless roads and bridges that were severely damaged by recent flooding. Our citizens in rural and urban counties know all too well how desperately we need these repairs.”
“While their behavior is disappointing, it is also not surprising. We have seen before that these leaders are far more invested in advancing a radical ideology than standing up for the working and middle class. In spite of the short-sighted actions of these Republican congressmen, we are thankful that the bill passed overwhelmingly due to the leadership of members like Congressman Clyburn.”
The 5-year $305 billion bill is expected to be approved by the Senate in a similar fashion this week.
