South Carolina Democratic Party Honors the 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday

Apr 03, 2025

Columbia, SC – Today, the South Carolina Democratic Party (SCDP) commemorates the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, honoring the brave men and women who risked their lives on March 7, 1965, to secure voting rights for all Americans. The historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, which was met with brutal violence, became a turning point in the civil rights movement and led directly to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

As the nation reflects on this pivotal moment in history, SCDP Chair Christale Spain emphasized the ongoing need to protect civil rights and fight back against modern-day threats to democracy:

“Sixty years ago, the foot soldiers of Selma shed blood on the Edmund Pettus Bridge to secure the sacred right to vote. Today, as extremists attempt to roll back that progress, we must channel their courage and fight harder than ever to defend our civil rights,” said Chair Spain. “We honor their legacy not just with our words but with our actions—by organizing, voting, and standing against injustice wherever it arises.”

Democrats remain committed to continuing the fight for voting rights, social justice, and equality. As we honor the past, we look to the future, determined to ensure that every South Carolinian has a voice in our democracy.
