South Carolina Democratic Party announces record breaking turnout in the 2020 Democratic Presidential Preference Primary
Columbia, SC – Saturday’s First in the South Democratic Presidential Primary had the highest turnout ever recorded in its history. 539,020 Democrats and Independents voted in the First in the South Presidential Preference Primary. Not only is this a significant spike in voter turnout from 2016, but this broke 2008’s previous record by 6,869 votes.
A few of the counties with the greatest increase in voter turnout are as follows:
Beaufort County: Voter turnout increased by 81%
Berkeley County: Voter turnout increased by 63%
Charleston County: Voter turnout increased by 58%
Dorchester County: Voter turnout increased by 62%
Greenville County: Voter turnout increased by 72%
Horry County: Voter turnout increased by 80%
Lancaster County: Voter turnout increased by 75%
York County: Voter turnout increased by 86%
In Congressman Joe Cunningham’s District (SC-1), all four counties represented in the district saw a significant increase in Democratic participation.
Greenville County’s Democratic participation increased by 72%, Lancaster increased by 75%, and York increased by 86%, proving that several regions of the state have been written off as Republican territories for too long.
South Carolina Democratic Party Chair, Trav Robertson Jr., released the following statement on the monumental voter turnout:
“This is a monumental moment for Democrats in South Carolina. Voter turnout from this past weekend reflects what many of us already knew: South Carolinians have had enough. These numbers should scare Republicans, especially Trump’s lackeys like Lindsey Graham.
South Carolinians are clearly ready to send Lindsey home, re elect Joe Cunningham to Congress, take back the State Senate, and continue to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. It is now our responsibility to take advantage of this opportunity and put our candidates in a position to win this November.”
