SCDP STATEMENT ON S.C. CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS VOTING TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT AND IGNORE ZIKA
Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Democratic Party released the following statement today on the votes of Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott and Representatives Mark Sanford, Jeff Duncan, Trey Gowdy, Mick Mulvaney, and Tom Rice against legislation to fund the government and combat the spread of the Zika virus. Had the legislation not been enacted, the federal government would have shut down at midnight Friday night.
“Make no mistake: if the votes of these Republicans had carried the day, our government would be on the brink of a shutdown and the Zika virus would be on the brink of a U.S. epidemic. Mick Mulvaney, at least, doesn’t seem to mind either of these possibilities; when he shut down the government in 2013, he dismissed it as a mere ‘slowdown,’ and earlier this month, he denied the science linking Zika to birth defects. Perhaps the six other ‘no’ votes in the South Carolina delegation agree with him on these matters.
“This intransigence makes it clearer than ever that Lindsey Graham, Tim Scott, Mark Sanford, Jeff Duncan, Trey Gowdy, Mick Mulvaney, and Tom Rice are the problem in Washington. Thomas Dixon, Dimitri Cherny, Arik Bjorn, Hosea Cleveland, Chris Fedalei, Fran Person, and Mal Hyman are the solution. Enough is enough!”
