SCDP STATEMENT ON NEW POLL SHOWING PRESIDENTIAL RACE DEAD EVEN IN SC

Aug 23, 2016

Columbia, SC – The Feldman Group released a poll today showing the presidential race in South Carolina all tied up, with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump deadlocked at 39%. This comes on the heels of a Public Policy Polling poll earlier this month showing a 2-point race.

The results also bode well for Democratic prospects in South Carolina in future elections. Among voters under 45, Clinton holds a 9-point lead. Respondents in the new poll also expressed progressive views on several key issues, with at least a plurality more likely to support candidates who favor:

– A law requiring equal pay for equal work (82% of respondents more likely)

– Universal gun background checks and no-fly-no-buy (81%)

– Increasing state education funding (81%)

– Reducing college loan costs (79%)

– Raising the minimum wage (69%)

– Tax cuts for the middle class and tax increases for the wealthy (67%)

– Universal pre-kindergarten (62%)

– Expanding Social Security even if payroll taxes increase (61%)

– Providing birth control to teenagers and low-income women (60%)

– Expanding Medicaid (55%)

– Increasing funding for infrastructure even if the deficit increases (49%)

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison said, “These results leave no doubt: South Carolina is becoming a legitimate battleground state, following in the footsteps of our Southeastern neighbors Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. With a dedicated effort, not only can Hillary Clinton carry South Carolina this fall, but Democrats will be able to compete and win up and down the ballot for decades to come. The present is bright, and the future is even brighter.”
