SCDP STATEMENT ON JEFF DUNCAN HONOREE BEING REFERRED FOR CRIMINAL CONTEMPT

Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Democratic Party released the following statement today on the referral of Sheriff Joe Arpaio to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for criminal contempt of court by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow, a George W. Bush appointee. Arpaio, who was found by Judge Snow to have intentionally violated multiple court orders in a racial profiling case, is still scheduled to be honored as a special guest at Congressman Jeff Duncan’s Faith & Freedom BBQ in Anderson on Monday.

“Less than two months ago, Jeff Duncan released a statement that said, in part, ‘If the rule of law is meaningless, the very foundation of our country begins to breakdown [sic].’ If those who violate court orders are honored rather than condemned, the rule of law is undermined. If Jeff Duncan welcomes Joe Arpaio as his special guest on Monday, then by his own logic, his commitment to the very foundation of our country will be brought into question.”

The other two announced special guests at Rep. Duncan’s BBQ are Reps. Mick Mulvaney and Mark Meadows. Rep. Meadows, a Republican from North Carolina, is embroiled in a House ethics investigation for improperly using taxpayer funds to pay an ex-staffer who had been fired for sexual harassment.
