SCDP CHAIR STATEMENT ON STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS AND DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE
Columbia, SC – South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement on Governor Nikki Haley’s State of the State address and Senator Thomas McElveen’s Democratic response:
“As we await Henry McMaster’s Trump-orchestrated takeover of the Governor’s Mansion, tonight’s speeches made abundantly clear that Republicans have failed and only Democrats can drain the swamp. As South Carolina begins its 15th consecutive year of Republican government, too many of our roads are crumbling, too many of our schools are failing, too many of our people still need health care, too many of our state government agencies and employees lack the resources they need to serve us effectively, and too many of our Republican politicians are corrupt.
“Senator McElveen is an exemplary public servant who has earned the trust and support of his constituents, many of whom don’t always vote Democrat. Likely soon-to-be Governor McMaster would be wise to follow the vision Senator McElveen laid out tonight. If Republicans continue the failed policies of the last 14 years, though, it will be up to Democrats to turn this vision of a better South Carolina into reality. As Senator McElveen showed tonight, Democrats are up to the challenge.”
