Columbia, SC – South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement on Rep. Mike Pitts’ bill to register South Carolina journalists with the Secretary of State.
Here we go again, yet another South Carolina Republican legislator pushing a frivolous bill to infringe upon our constitutional rights. Republicans should prioritize all of our constitutional rights, and not just the ones they like the best. From religious tests for refugees to this attempt to limit freedom of speech, it is clear the Republican Party is desperate to vilify anyone they disagree with or don’t understand.
“Freedom of the press is paramount in a free society and Rep. Pitts’ bill would put South Carolina in line with the world’s most authoritarian regimes. As Donald Trump continues to lead in the polls, we have seen Republicans at all levels of the party using fear to distract us from the fact that they have no solutions to strengthen our economy and grow the middle class.”
