SC Dems Chair Jaime Harrison Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

Aug 06, 2015

Columbia, SC— South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

Today marks fifty years of inclusive civic participation for all. The poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and literacy tests of yesterday are today’s restrictive voter ID laws and racial gerrymandering.

The Voting Rights Act was fought for on the streets and bridges across the South. This day reminds us why we fought; especially as Republicans in South Carolina and across the nation go out of their way to erase our progress and pass restrictive voting laws that limit Americans’ fundamental right to vote. These laws disproportionately affect women, minorities, youth, and the elderly. The South Carolina Democratic Party remains committed to advancing voting access for all Americans, today and every day.”
