Excerpts from Today’s Press Call on Governor Jeb Bush and Senator Marco Rubio Campaigning in SC

Oct 23, 2015

Columbia, SC— Today, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison hosted a press conference call on Republican presidential candidates, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, campaigning in South Carolina this weekend.

Here are a few excerpts from SCDP Chair Jaime Harrison as prepared for delivery:

“Marco Rubio is no leader with fresh ideas; he’s a follower peddling a tired and beaten Republican playbook. At every turn, Rubio has pandered to the Republican base instead of doing what’s best for his constituents and the country.

“Senator Rubio has joined the ranks of a Republican Party so out of touch with the mainstream that they are actively campaigning against the very policies that would build a strong middle class and move our country forward, like raising the minimum wage, investing in education, and making sure people have access to affordable health care. Marco Rubio just doesn’t get it.

“As much as Jeb pretends to be different from his brother, we know what his presidency would look because we’ve seen it before. The same trickle down economics, outsourced jobs, and massive tax breaks for corporations and the very wealthy that pushed our economy into the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression.

“Senator Rubio and Governor Bush reflect a Republican Party that can’t wait to appeal to the darkest elements of their party by alienating more and more Americans every single day. Their rhetoric and failed policies might appeal to their base, but their outdated ideas make it clear that they would only take America backwards.”
