Greenville, SC- John Mauldin, the Chief Public Defender for the 13th Judicial Circuit of South Carolina will be the guest speaker at the February 13th meeting of Democratic Women of Greenville County. Mr. Mauldin will discuss the evolving debate over the death penalty.
Mr. Mauldin is a graduate of Wofford College and Emory University School of Law. In 2006, Mr. Mauldin was honored by the SC Public Defender Association as the South Carolina Lawyer of the Year.
Since 1973, over 130 people have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence. From 2000-2007 there has been an average of 5 exonerations per year. There are currently 61 people sentenced to die in South Carolina. The FBI Uniform Crime Report showed that the South had the highest murder rate and the South accounts for over 80% of all executions.
The Monday, February 13th meeting will be held at Fried Green Tomatoes beginning at 12:15PM. Fried Green Tomatoes is located at 1175 Woods Crossing Road in Greenville, just behind Haywood Mall.
