South Carolina Democratic Party Applauds President Biden’s First Year in Office

COLUMBIA, SC — Today marks one year since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office. After four years of divisiveness, hostility, and corruption, this was a breath of fresh air for many Americans. On day one, President Biden inherited an economy in turmoil and a raging pandemic. He went right to work and passed the America Rescue Plan, which resulted in shots in arms, kids back in schools, and people in jobs, and every South Carolina Republican voted against it.

“As Henry McMaster demonstrated last night, President Biden’s American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal have been transformative for South Carolina,” said SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. “If you don’t believe me, just watch our Republican Governor’s state of the state address last night, and count how many times he mentioned projects that are paid for by ‘federal funds.’ Hell, he even mentioned free college! South Carolina Republicans have neglected this state for decades. Thankfully Democrats passed historic relief over the past year.”

South Carolina’s recovery under President Biden:

  • Unemployment Rate: South Carolina’s unemployment rate has fallen from 5.3% in January to 3.7% in November.
  • Unemployment Claims: South Carolina unemployment claims are down 82% under Biden.
  • Jobs Created: 53,500 jobs added in South Carolina under Biden.
  • New Businesses Started: 24,830 New Businesses started in South Carolina so far this year.
  • Restaurants Kept Open: Rescue Plan helped 1,042 South Carolina restaurants stay open – with an average award of $206,404 per restaurant.
  • Economic Impact Payments: South Carolina families received 2.7 million Economic Impact Payments – $6.4 billion in direct relief.
  • Monthly Child Tax Credit: Monthly CTC payments for South Carolina families of 969,000 children – with an average monthly payment for each family of $441 – and $1.5 billion total paid in monthly payments.
  • Reducing Health Insurance Costs: Rescue plan saved South Carolina ACA Marketplace Enrollees $54 per month – reducing premiums by 48%.
  • Funds for K-12 Schools: $2.1 billion in relief to South Carolina K-12 public schools – helping schools reopen and address learning loss.
  • State and Local Fiscal Support: Rescue Plan is providing South Carolina state and local governments with $4.1 billion in fiscal relief.
