South Carolina Students, Parents, and Teachers Deserve More than a $600,000 Ad Buy
Columbia, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster today made a “big promise” in his first tv ad: he wants spend $40 million a year to put an armed school resource officer in every school. This is nothing more than an empty campaign promise coming from a Governor who got veto after veto – including one where he blocked funds for a Head Start school bus – overridden by state lawmakers just this week. This is also coming from the same Governor who said he would arm teachers instead of give them a pay raise, refuses to do anything about gun safety reform, called our students speaking out against gun deaths “shameful,” and vetoed money to replace old, fire-prone school buses just two months after a two decade old school bus caught fire with more than 50 students on board.
Our state ranks near the bottom in education and is one of the worst states for teachers. The Governor’s time could be better spent investing in our teachers, reforming our education funding formula so no kid gets left behind, and lowering tuition costs. South Carolinians are waiting for him to take real action, instead of just listening to campaign consultants.
