FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATS CONDEMN REPUBLICAN MEMBERS VOTING AGAINST COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE JANUARY 6 INSURRECTION
SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. released the following statement:
“Each of us was forced to bear witness to the violent attack carried out against our democracy, the Capitol Police and members of Congress on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 as our elected officials worked to carry out a peaceful transition of power.
Yesterday, South Carolina Representatives Mace, Wilson, Duncan, Timmons, and Norman once again brought disgrace to our state. They refused to vote for the bi-partisan commission organized to investigate the events of January 6th. The Commission would help to ensure that no acts of politically motivated violence can ever take place again.
Republicans will claim that their opposition is rooted in a need for this commission to explore the uprisings which occurred last summer in the wake of the death of George Floyd. We know this is a blatant ruse to avoid doing the right thing. Five lives were lost on January 6th and a sitting Republican president sat idly by as the life of his own Vice-President was put in jeopardy by those who breached the Capitol for no other purpose than to negate November’s election results.
This was an opportunity for the SC’s House Republicans to put country over party and work together with Democrats on a national security agenda issue, act on behalf of the Capitol Police who valiantly defended them and their colleagues and honor those who lost their lives.”
