Columbia, SC – South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson released the following statement on the General Assembly’s passage of a bill to raise the state gas tax to pay for road repairs:
“I applaud Democrats in the General Assembly for staying together and fighting for long overdue improvements to our roads and bridges. With Republicans divided, Democrats remained focused on solving the problem and were willing to compromise to get the job done. In addition, thanks to Democrats’ dogged efforts, the middle class and college students will receive tax credits, a much-needed expansion of economic and educational opportunity.
“This bus is heading down the road. Governor McMaster now has to decide if he wants to be on it. If this governor decides he wants to be irrelevant in solving our state’s most pressing problems, South Carolina voters will replace him with a new governor who can play a constructive role.”
