SC Dems Statement on the 80th Anniversary of Social Security

Aug 14, 2015

Columbia, SC— South Carolina Democratic Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement regarding the 80th anniversary of Social Security.

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act to protect everyday hard-working Americans ‘against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.’ Today, on the 80th anniversary, we celebrate how Social Security has provided a critical financial lifeline to our country’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Many of the Republican Presidential candidates have horrible records of providing support for the elderly. In particular, Governor Rick Perry of Texas has been a vocal critic of Social Security and in an interview with Sean Hannity he implied the bedrock program for the nation’s elderly was nothing more than a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ Instead of caring for those who have worked hard to build this great nation, Perry and other Republican Presidential candidates are determined to destroy a vital safety net for our seniors.”
