One year ago today, Rick Scott released his 12-point plan, which included a proposal to put Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block every five years.
South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson Jr. released the following statement to mark the anniversary:
“Over a million South Carolinians rely on Social Security and Medicare, but that hasn’t stopped politicians like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott from pushing to jeopardize them. Extreme Republicans like Haley and Scott are so focused on appealing to their MAGA base that they’re willing to gut programs that seniors rely on in the process.”
Rick Scott isn’t the only Republican whose plans could upend the lives of seniors, retired folks, people with disabilities, and more who rely on Social Security and Medicare. For years Nikki Haley and Tim Scott have made it clear they support ending Social Security and Medicare as we know them:
- Nikki Haley supported Paul Ryan’s plan to end Medicare as we know it and has repeatedly doubled down on her record of supporting cuts to both programs as a key plank of her presidential campaign.
- Tim Scott has spent years advocating for putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block. He also supported Paul Ryan’s plan to end Medicare as we know it and claimed that the seniors and retired folks who depended on the programs have an “entitlement mentality” despite paying into the programs their whole lives.
