COLUMBIA, SC — Today the South Carolina Senate, pressured by radical and extremist Republicans passed their version of the Fetal Heartbeat Bill.
The South Carolina GOP knows that this bill will most likely suffer the same fate as its counterparts in Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, and Ohio – and be struck down or stayed by the courts. It is a political game, an exercise in cruelty that will hurt women – literally.
SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. stated, “ Male GOP Senators delivered a message to women across our state: your constitutional rights mean nothing to us. Taxpayers of the 7 other states to have passed this bill have paid millions of dollars in legal fees, and South Carolinians will fare no differently. I guess Alan Wilson wants to give his old law firm another 75 million in fees. Republicans would like to paint themselves as financially conservative, but the only thing this bill will accomplish is creating a massive expense for our state before a court tosses it out.
What a waste. These folks claim to value the sanctity of life but refuse to do anything as COVID ravishes our state. What do Shane Massey and Richard Cash think of the 6000 people who died because they didn’t attack COVID with the same fervor as attacking the rights of women?
This bill is plainly unconstitutional. The Republican party has shown again that the rights of South Carolinians mean nothing when far right Senators have an opportunity to stroke their ego. This is the most shameful act of the legislature in recent memory, and I pray that legislators take time to understand the nightmare they have just unleashed on the women and families of our state”
