Ahead of Mike Pence’s appearance in Columbia today, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson released the following statement:
“Four years ago, Donald Trump promised to cut taxes for South Carolina’s middle-class families. Instead, he and Lindsey Graham raised taxes on more than 800,000 South Carolinians while handing massive giveaways to a few powerful special interests. Our hospitals too have been affected by the Trump administration as local healthcare providers are cutting staff. Right here in Columbia, Prisma Health laid off over 300 staff members last month – a measure that would not be needed if the GOP had expanded medicaid to cover the nearly 300,000 people eligible for it and currently without healthcare. Pence should have to answer to the hundreds of South Carolinians who have lost their jobs, and to the families across the state without access to affordable healthcare. Nothing Pence says today can spin this administration’s long trail of broken promises to hard-working families. We deserve better, and in 2020, we’re going to get it.”
