HR 1. FOR THE PEOPLE ACT TO DISRUPT GOP PLAN TO LEGALIZE VOTER SUPPRESSION

 

Columbia, S.C.— On the heels of Georgia Republicans enacting the most sweeping, draconian Jim Crow era-esque restrictions on voting rights, Democrats in South Carolina call on the Republican members of our federal delegation and GOP members of the SC General Assembly to reject oppressive and discriminatory voting measures. 

HR 1. For The People Act is a comprehensive piece of legislation designed to expand voter registration, protect vote by mail and early voting access, while eliminating partisan gerrymandering and demanding an end to voter intimidation and suppression. 

Democrats will never stop fighting to protect voting rights. The right to vote is sacred. Across the country, over 250 pieces of voter suppression legislation have been introduced in state legislatures —  a concerted Republican effort. 

“Why in the world is it a problem for voting to be safe, easy and secure?  If Republicans had actual policies people believed in, there would be no need to legislate voter suppression.” said SCDP Chair, Trav Robertson, Jr. “The GOP is more concerned with maintaining power at any cost than doing what is right in the name of Democracy, so we demand that Congress do the right thing to ensure we never return to the era of Jim Crow politics when it comes to protecting voting rights in our state and nation.”
