The Passing of Pug Ravenel

Mar 27, 2017

We were saddened to hear about the passing of Charles “Pug” Ravenel. A Charleston native, Ravenel left a lucrative career on Wall Street in the 1970s to return to South Carolina and pursue public service. While his political campaigns came up short, he embodied a progressive energy that was ahead of its time. In the words of then-SCDP Chair Don Fowler, “Mr. Ravenel brought to the South Carolina arena a vigor, perspective, intelligence, and charisma which we have rarely seen.” Senator Hollings said, “Pug is the best thing that ever happened to our party. We were dying. He brought in fresh faces and fresh ideas.”

The memory of Pug Ravenel inspires us to redouble our efforts to offer dynamic leadership and innovative solutions to the people of South Carolina. They are needed now more than ever.
