CONGRESS MUST MAKE EXPANDED CHILD TAX CREDIT PERMANENT, PASS PROVISIONS FROM AMERICAN FAMILIES PLAN

Jul 20, 2021

COLUMBIA, SC — Last week Democrats delivered for South Carolina families by providing tangible relief in the form of a historic tax cut for middle class families. Across the state, the families of 1 million children began receiving monthly payments of up to $300 per child. These checks will help put food on the table, pay for child care, and help make ends meet.

There are still 159,000 children in South Carolina who are considered poor. Congress must act to make this critical relief permanent. President Biden’s American Families Plan will extend the Child Tax Credit (CTC) through 2025 and increase the payments. It is estimated that extending the CTC would reduce child poverty in South Carolina by 43%.

“While Democrats are working to cut taxes for working families, rebuild our economy, and get Americans back to work, South Carolina Republicans are playing political games,” said SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. “Every single South Carolina Republican voted against cutting child poverty in half and giving a massive tax break to middle class families across the Palmetto State. It is clear that Democrats will continue fighting for South Carolina families and rebuilding the middle class while Republicans will continue their obstructionist tactics.”
