US SENATE MUST FOLLOW HOUSE AND PASS THE JOHN R. LEWIS VOTING RIGHTS ADVANCEMENT ACT OF 2021

Aug 25, 2021

COLUMBIA, SC — South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. issued the following statement on the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act in the United States House of Representatives.

“Today South Carolina Democrats are celebrating the passage of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 in the United States House of Representatives. Democrats continue to be at the forefront in the fight to expand access to the ballot box and protect voting rights. Now the United States Senate must continue these efforts by passing this legislation.

“It is embarrassing that not a single South Carolina Congressional Republican voted for this legislation, which honors the life and legacy of the late Rep. John Lewis by prohibiting discriminatory voter suppression tactics. Once again, the South Carolina GOP Members of Congress have made it clear they have no interest in protecting voting rights or holding fair elections. South Carolina Democrats are committed to protecting voting rights and we are grateful for leaders like Majority Whip Clyburn for supporting legislation that ensures free and fair elections.”
