Ahead of Pence Visit, SC Dems Slam Trump’s Broken Promises to South Carolinians

Feb 14, 2020

Ahead of Mike Pence’s appearance in Columbia today, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson released the following statement:

“Four years ago, Donald Trump promised to cut taxes for South Carolina’s middle-class families. Instead, he and Lindsey Graham raised taxes on more than 800,000 South Carolinians while handing massive giveaways to a few powerful special interests. Our hospitals too have been affected by the Trump administration as local healthcare providers are cutting staff. Right here in Columbia, Prisma Health laid off over 300 staff members last month – a measure that would not be needed if the GOP had expanded medicaid to cover the nearly 300,000 people eligible for it and currently without healthcare. Pence should have to answer to the hundreds of South Carolinians who have lost their jobs, and to the families across the state without access to affordable healthcare. Nothing Pence says today can spin this administration’s long trail of broken promises to hard-working families. We deserve better, and in 2020, we’re going to get it.”

BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES TO SOUTH CAROLINA

Promise: “We’re bringing down the rates way down. We’re really taking care of the middle class, the middle income, really, really taking care. It’s a dynamic plan, and it’s going to turn us.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Anderson SC, 10/19/15]

Promise: “My tax plan is — you saw it cutting it big for the middle class, big, big because the middle class has been forgotten in this country. Believe me, it’s been forgotten. I love the middle class.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Greenville SC, 2/15/16]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam will hike taxes on more than 800,000 South Carolinians while handing a windfall to a few powerful special interests.

Promise: “We’re going to bring jobs back from China. We’re bringing jobs back from Japan. We’re bringing them back from Mexico.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Lexington, SC, 1/27/16]

Reality: Trump’s tax scam incentivizes corporations to ship even more jobs overseas.
