While Trump Tariffs Hurt South Carolina Businesses, Henry McMaster Wants to “Wait and See”
Columbia, SC – Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Trav Robertson, released the following statement after new reporting that BMW car exports plunged 35% in August, in part due to President Trump’s tariffs:
“Henry McMaster is going along with a war on Palmetto businesses and workers because he’s afraid to stand up to President Trump and do the right thing for the people of South Carolina. It looks like Henry is not going to be happy until he drives BMW out of our state.”
In March, BMW’s CEO said Trump’s auto tariffs “would have an impact on jobs in the United States.”
In June, BMW sent a letter to the United States Commerce Department about how Trump tariffs could “could drive up manufacturing costs and risk jobs in South Carolina.”
It was reported that BMW has began to make more of the X3 crossover S.U.V.s in plants in Shenyang, China and Rosslyn, South Africa. The company had also announced that it would increase production capacity in two Shenyang plants next year – overtaking the total production in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
We’ll leave you all with this:
“BMW saved Spartanburg and transformed South Carolina into a manufacturing mecca to the world. When you mess with the golden goose, they’re family, and you’re messing with me. When you mess with the golden goose, they’re family, and you’re messing with me.” – David Britt, Spartanburg Councilman. NYT / 7.2018
SC Republicans Host Meadows in the Midst of Scandals
“Congressman Meadows’ clouded judgement and disregard for our democracy is gravely concerning.”
The South Carolina Republican Party is hosting North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows tonight at their annual Silver Elephant fundraising dinner. Meadows, a staunch conservative and chair of the controversial Freedom Caucus, has been one of the loudest voices in a highly partisan movement among House Republicans to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein.
In addition to filing articles of impeachment against Rosenstein, Mark Meadows endorsed Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House this morning. Jim Jordan is in the middle of an ugly Ohio State sex abuse scandal, being accused by former students of knowing about the horrific sexual abuse being committed by a University doctor, and simply choosing not to report it. Meadows’ endorsement of Jordan, and willingness to overlook his enablement of mass sexual abuse, is a clear indication of his character.
“The South Carolina GOP should be ashamed for bringing someone so lacking in morals to the Palmetto State.” said South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Trav Robertson. “The Party who claims to be values based is giving a man with seemingly no values a platform to speak. His traitorous actions against Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and careless endorsement of Jim Jordan are sickening. A man who cares so little about preserving our sacred democratic process or protecting vulnerable students cannot possibly reflect American or family values. To overlook this for the sake of raising money is truly despicable.”
