The South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison issued the following statement of taking down the confederate flag at the South Carolina State Capital:
“After flying for over fifty years at our state capital, the confederate flag is finally coming down. Thank you, Gov. Haley, for joining people of good will from all over South Carolina and across the country in our call to take down that flag.
Whether it was in the wake of last week’s tragic events in Charleston or a matter of conscious reflection, thank you for hearing the voices who rallied together on Saturday. Please know that this is just the beginning, though. There is so much more to be done to bridge the racial divide in our state and our country. This is a wonderful first step on the journey toward a more inclusive and caring South Carolina for everyone.
As I said on Saturday from the capital steps, we have come together and are guided by our state’s motto: ‘Dum Spiro Spero – While I breathe, I hope.’ Let’s keep that motto in mind moving forward.”
