This week, we’re kicking off our Candidate Spotlight series highlighting our candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor; James Smith and Mandy Powers Norrell. These two fantastic candidates and their team have been working tirelessly to get their message out, and we’re so excited to introduce them here:
Mandy Powers Norrell, Democratic Candidate for Lieutenant Governor
Mandy Powers Norrell, our candidate for Lieutenant Governor, is no stranger to hard work. Hailing from Lancaster, she grew up the daughter of two working-class parents. When she was just a teenager, she started working in the same mill as her parents and used the money she saved up to put herself through college. The very first member of her family to attend college, she graduated from Furman University with Honors, and then earned her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law where she graduated near the top of her class.
Since being elected to the SC House in 2012, Mandy has worked diligently to make her home state a better place to work, live, and raise a family in. Serving on the Judiciary and Legislative Oversight committees, Rep. Powers Norrell has made a name for herself in the chamber not only through her commitment to public service, but also her willingness to reach across the aisle to get bills passed.
Mandy is the proud mom of Teddy and Emma, and happily married to her husband Mitch. Their family resides in Lancaster, where Mandy grew up. Her impressive career in law and government makes her an incredible candidate to serve as our next Lieutenant Governor.
James Smith, Democratic Candidate for Governor
James Smith, our candidate for Governor, has devoted himself to public service. As a Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard, he spent a year in combat in Afghanistan fighting for our country. As a State Representative, he has always put the people of his district first, and has committed his career to bettering South Carolina. James knows what it means to be an effective leader.
James attended the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he earned his JD. After serving 8 years as a JAG officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard, he resigned his officer commission to enlist as an infantryman at age 37. He served as a Combat Advisor to Afghan Security Forces, and he received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Purple Heart in recognition of his service.
During his time in the state legislature, Representative Smith has been a leader on issues facing our veterans, the environment, and education. His legislative career has been centered around effective leadership and collaboration, while always putting service before self. James’s campaign for Governor has echoed those same values, and we’re so excited to support him on this journey.
James currently lives in Columbia, where he was born and raised. He’s the proud husband to his wife, Kirkland, and a proud father of their four children Emerson, Thomas, Paul, and Shannon. James Smith’s enduring commitment to public service, willingness to reach across the aisle, and proven leadership are just some of the reasons we’re proud to call him our candidate for Governor.
